Dinner Ideas for Picky Eaters: 12 Meals That Come Apart

By the Bunlo team · Updated

The best dinner ideas for picky eaters are meals that come apart: tacos, plain pasta with sauce on the side, breakfast for dinner, sheet-pan chicken, quesadillas and rice bowls. Everyone builds their own plate, the picky eater always gets one food they already like, and nobody cooks a second dinner.

You don’t have to hunt for special recipes for a picky eater. What helps more is a dinner they can control. When the food comes apart, a child can take the plain chicken and skip the sauce, while the rest of the table eats the full version. That’s why tacos, pasta nights and breakfast for dinner keep showing up on lists of meals picky kids will eat.

So think about the format before you think about the dish. Pick dinners where the parts stay separate, put one food your picky eater already likes on the table every night, and let everyone build their own plate. You cook once.

Expect slow progress with new foods. Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia says a child may need 8 to 15 tries before accepting something new, and most parents give up after 3 to 5. A dinner that comes apart lets those tries happen without a fight: the new food sits on the table, and nobody has to eat it tonight.

The 12 dinners below all work this way. Most take 30 minutes or less, use ordinary grocery store ingredients, and need nothing you don’t already own.

What makes a dinner work for a picky eater

Four things, and the dinners below have most of them:

12 dinner ideas picky eaters tend to accept

1. Build-your-own tacos

Brown ground beef or turkey with a mild seasoning, then set out tortillas, shredded cheese, lettuce, salsa and sour cream. A picky child can eat a cheese-only taco while you load yours. Keep a spicy salsa for the adults.

2. Plain pasta with sauce on the side

Cook the pasta, toss a portion with butter and parmesan for the picky eater, and serve the sauce in a bowl. Meat sauce, pesto or roasted vegetables can go on everyone else’s. It’s the easiest dinner on this list to repeat each week.

3. Breakfast for dinner

Pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon or sausage, toast and fruit. Even a very picky kid usually finds two things there to eat. It’s also one of the fastest dinners there is, and it’s cheap.

4. Sheet-pan chicken and potatoes

Toss chicken thighs and potato chunks in oil and salt, and roast at 425°F for about 35 minutes. Keep the chicken and potatoes in separate rows so nothing touches. Add a corner of broccoli for whoever will eat it.

5. Flatbread pizzas

Use naan or store-bought flatbread as the crust. Each person gets one and tops it: plain cheese, pepperoni, or whatever’s in the fridge. Ten minutes in a hot oven and it’s done.

6. Rice bowls

Make a pot of rice and set out cooked chicken, black beans, corn, cheese and avocado. Kids who only eat rice and cheese still sit down to the same meal. Teriyaki chicken works too if you keep the sauce on the side.

7. Quesadillas

Cheese in a tortilla, crisped in a pan. Add chicken, beans or peppers to the adult ones. Cut them into wedges, because a triangle somehow tastes better to a five-year-old than a circle.

8. Chicken tenders with dips

Bread chicken strips in panko and bake them, or cook them in the air fryer. Serve with ketchup, ranch and honey mustard. Dips are a low-stakes way to try a new flavor.

9. Meatballs three ways

A batch of meatballs can go on pasta, into a sub roll with cheese, or onto a plate plain with a dip. Make extra and freeze them for a busy night.

10. Grilled cheese and tomato soup

The sandwich is the safe food and the soup is the try. Plenty of kids start by dipping a corner, and that counts.

11. Slow cooker pulled chicken

Put chicken breasts, a little broth and a mild barbecue sauce in the slow cooker in the morning. At dinner, shred it and serve it on buns, in tortillas or plain. One pot covers three different plates.

12. Fried rice

Day-old rice, scrambled egg, frozen peas and carrots, and a splash of soy sauce. If peas get picked out, they get picked out. You’ve still served them, and that’s one more exposure.

How to serve one dinner to everyone

How you put dinner on the table matters too. Put the food in serving bowls and let people help themselves. When a child serves their own plate, the new food is an option instead of a demand.

One feeding approach worth knowing is dietitian Ellyn Satter’s Division of Responsibility: you decide what, when and where food is served, and the child decides whether to eat and how much. In practice that means fewer standoffs: you’re not counting bites, and nobody has to clean their plate.

A few habits that help:

Picky adults count too

Plenty of adults are picky, and the same rules apply. If your partner hates mushrooms, put the mushrooms in a bowl on the side and move on. Build-your-own dinners work just as well for a table of grown-ups with different tastes.

Plan the week around dinners that work

Once you know which dinners land, write them down. A list of 8 to 10 dinners your family reliably eats is the backbone of a weekly plan, and it’s fine to repeat them. Add one new dinner a week, built the same way, and keep it if it works.

Planning also cuts the 5 p.m. scramble, which is when a lot of “fine, just have cereal” dinners happen.

If you’d like an app to handle that, Bunlo plans a week of dinners and leaves out the foods you mark as skipped. You can also see what else is on the blog or ask us anything through Support.

FAQ

What do extremely picky eaters eat?

Usually a short list of plain, predictable foods: buttered noodles, chicken nuggets, bread, crackers, cheese, a few fruits. Treat those as safe foods and put one on every plate next to the family dinner. If the list keeps shrinking, ask your pediatrician.

Should I make a separate meal for my picky eater?

Try not to. Cooking a second dinner every night teaches that refusing gets a new menu. Serve one dinner that includes at least one food your child already eats, and let them decide how much of it to eat.

How many times should I offer a new food?

More than feels reasonable. Children's Hospital of Philadelphia says it takes 8 to 15 tries before a child accepts a new food, while most parents stop after 3 to 5. Small portions keep the waste down.

What are quick dinners for picky eaters?

Quesadillas, scrambled eggs and toast, plain pasta with sauce on the side, and fried rice with frozen peas all take about 20 minutes. Air fryer chicken tenders are close behind if you buy them breaded.

What are cheap dinners for picky eaters?

Pasta, rice bowls, quesadillas, fried rice and breakfast for dinner all lean on cheap staples: pasta, rice, eggs, tortillas, beans and cheese. Buy plenty of what everyone eats and keep the pricier toppings small.
